This activity takes around 20min. The icons above are made on the website Piktochart.
The rule of the “Karuta” game is as follows:
Students will be divided into groups, and they will compete within the group. The cards should be spread face up on a flat surface.
The LA, who is the “reader,” will randomly show one of the corresponding Japanese sentences without reading it aloud (I used PPT to show the Japanese translations).
Students are expected to race each other to determine which cards correspond to the Japanese sentence, and then to touch/grab/claim the correct card first. The process will be repeated until no cards remain. Students with the most cards will be the winner.
For the activity, LA may need to prepare several sets of “Karuta” using these icons
I couldn’t think of a better way so I simply printed the icons and glued them to cardboard. I made six sets of cards, and some of them are probably still preserved in Professor Nemoto’s office.
