Experiment with the Fluent Syntax

Fluentis a new, modern, runtime localization system with new localization syntax and low-level localization API.

The following syntax in Japanese is created to provide notifications for restaurants to know the number and status of customers when a reservation or an order is made. when the number of customers is larger than 10, they are referred to as “団体様 (group).” It is designed in the “Playground” of ProjectFluent.org

APPLICATION

Izakaya 居酒屋

I gained inspiration from my experience of working at a chain Izakaya in Tokyo. Izakaya is a type of Japanese drinking bar/restaurant where offers a variety of food and beers. Here is an interesting video introducing the culture inside Izakaya.

The Izakaya I worked at provided special services for repeat customers, such as offering a cup of fishbone miso soup when they check out. Waiters had to remember the table numbers of those repeat guests — a task that is not particularly difficult by itself — but things tend to become messy when the restaurant gets crowded. In addition, most of the waiters were high-school students who won’t work in the same place for a long term — since the salary in a chain Izakaya tends to be cheaper. Therefore, if something similar can be applied when customers order food using tablets or make a reservation online, then it will decrease the burden of waiters.

IMPROVEMENT

The current syntax might be too simple. For instance, it does not clearly define who is a “returning customer,” and the definition might vary in different restaurants. With such consideration, “are you a returning guest?” seems to be a strange question to be asked from a customer’s perspective. “How many times did you dine in/order from our restaurant?” seems to be a more clear question to ask. Therefore, one improvement that can be made is to set the number of times which a customer visited/ordered from the restaurant as a variable.

For example, if I define a returning customer as someone who dines in/orders from the restaurant at least three times, then a syntax, shown below, can be generated to improve the original version.

“A reservation is made by a repeat customer”
